By Trevor Pedley – captain-for-the-day
On Tuesday 5th September 2017 in quite pleasant conditions 11 Brentwood bowlers enjoyed a friendly four-rink mixed triples game at Rayleigh.
We were made welcome with tea on arrival so Rayleigh captain Bob Franklin and I agreed we would play straight through and have tea, biscuits, cake and a chat at the end.
Before we could start we had to borrow a player as we were one short due to a diary malfunction. Alan Darley was there to watch his wife play but finished up playing opposite her as Kate Davies’ lead and a very good job he did too despite having a dodgy hip!
It soon became apparent that overall we were the stronger side winning three rinks to one by a margin of 74 – 53, but Bob had pointed out that they try to encourage their newer bowlers to play on these occasions so that probably had a bearing on the outcome.
After the game, Bob said a few words expressing the hope we would meet at our venue next year. I replied and handed out pens to Pat, Peter and Ron as our highest winning rink, to Alan Darley as a memento of his temporary Brentwood status, and to Bob.
Brentwood players were: Joan Stevenson, Kate Davies, Daphne Gilbert, Allan Medcraft, Margaret Rayment, Pat Miller, Peter Smith, Ron Lofts, Marion Lofts, Trevor Pedley and Sandra Fenton.
