On a warm Sunday afternoon (27th August 2017) Brentwood entertained Writtle in a four-rink mixed triples friendly.
As captain-for-the-day I welcomed visiting captain Kevin Hazelgrove and his team and battle commenced at 2.30.
As usual the game was played in a friendly spirit but it soon became obvious that Kate Davies and her team on rink 8 were up against it, going 10 – 0 down before getting a point on the board. However on rink 10 Margaret Rayment and her crew were doing their best to even things up and were 15 – 7 up going into tea. Likewise the teams on rinks 9 and 11 held comfortable leads at the interval. However the old saying that everything changes after tea came true with both rinks 9 and 11 losing by two points, with the final overall score 69 – 79 in Writtle’s favour.
After an excellent salad tea and dessert provided by Maureen Jaycock, Sue Hickman and Kath Jolly, I said a few words of praise and rather than handing out the ubiquitous pens to the winning rink, I awarded them to Brentwood’s Kate Davies, Pat Miller and Marion Lofts for their perseverance in the face of adversity. Had there been prizes for a winning rink, Margaret Rayment, Keith Howson and Ann Powell would now be proud owners of yet another pen!
Brentwood teams: Kate Davies, Pat Miller, Marion Lofts; Daphne Gilbert, Maureen Murrell, Trevor Pedley; Ann Powell, Keith Howson, Margaret Rayment; Janet Howson, Joan Stevenson and Ron Lofts.
