Many members of Brentwood Bowling Club have been shocked to hear that Stonyhill Indoor Bowls Club in nearby Herongate is to close its doors in a few weeks’ time.
Around 30 members of the outdoor club are also long-standing members of Stonyhill with most transferring indoors for the winter months each year.
The shock news was announced at an extraordinary general meeting at Stonyhill on Friday evening (10th March) when chairman Paul Cheale explained that the club had been unable to secure a tenancy for the year ahead.
In a written statement, he told members: “The board and chairman have done their utmost to reach an agreement with the landlord, including offering a substantial increase in rent. However, the landlord is applying for planning permission to develop the site with the full expectation that it will be granted.
“Although sympathetic to the club’s contribution to the social welfare of members, including the disabled and our many elderly, our landlord will not consider our further occupation of the site under any circumstances. Therefore the board sees no other option but to cease all bowling and connected activities as from 1st May 2017.”
Some Brentwood BC members wanting to continue indoor bowling have already approached other clubs. If you are interested in joining Havering Indoor Bowls Club, contact Ann Powell for details and a membership application form or send a message using the Contact link above and we’ll email a copy to you.
Havering is offering Stonyhill members a £5 temporary membership to allow them to book roll-ups (fees apply) until 1st May when annual fees become payable. If anyone then wishes to upgrade to the £70 annual membership, the initial £5 will be deducted.
UPDATE: In the first four days following the announcement 86 Stonyhill members had submitted application forms to Havering.
