Twelve members of Brentwood Bowling Club made their way to Writtle on Sunday 28th August 2016 for the annual friendly match.
As we approached Chelmsford the wet roads were very noticeable but fortunately by the time we started play the threatening clouds had passed over and we were able to enjoy a very good afternoon’s sport in very pleasant conditions.
After a warm welcome from Writtle captain Keith Lodge, our four teams started to play triples and up until the tea break at nine ends the scores were very even on three rinks indicating a closely fought contest with Brentwood in the ascendancy by a handful of points.
After a refreshing cuppa, battle recommenced until about 5pm when we adjourned to the clubhouse to enjoy some good-natured banter and well-earned refreshment as we tucked into a very tasty ham salad and cheesecake dessert.
Captain Keith expressed his pleasure at the friendly atmosphere in which the game was played, thanking the bar and kitchen staff for their contribution to the afternoon, and revealed that the overall score was 64-58 in favour of Brentwood.
Trevor Pedley replied, thanking Writtle for their hospitality and expressing the wish to see them next year at Brentwood. He pointed out that Brentwood had the team of Janet Howson, Cliff Jaycock and Ron Jolly to thank for tipping the scales.
There was laughter as Trevor regretted being unable to present the usual chocolate bars to the winning rink as he had been elected captain for the afternoon only half an hour before play commenced.
Teams – Janet Howson, Cliff Jaycock and Ron Jolly; Trevor Watson, Maureen Murrell and Margaret Rayment; Keith Howson, Kath Jolly and Maureen Jaycock; Joan Stevenson, Trevor Pedley and Sandra Fenton.
