Six triples teams took part in the Richards Trophy competition on Sunday 21st August 2016 in tribute to the memory of former members George and Olive Richards from Doddinghurst.
Centenarian George died in 2011 and his wife died seven years earlier at the age of 90. Their daughters Janet Alderton and Celia Eade and Celia’s husband Frank were guests at this year’s event at King George’s Playing Fields and presented the trophy to the winning team.
Celia thanked officials for their invitation to spend the afternoon at the club and she outlined her family’s links going back to 1972 when her father joined. Her mother thought ‘if you can’t beat them, join them’, and she became one of the early members of the ladies’ section. Celia’s husband Frank was also a member for several years from 1975 until work commitments prevented him continuing.
Celia congratulated winning skip Harry Egleton, and team members Kath Jolly and Marion Lofts who scored 41 points, nine points clear of the runners-up.
Teams each played three games of six ends with 10 points for a win, five for a draw and points for ends won.
Runners-up were Ron Lofts (skip), Kate Davies and Pam Baker and in third place were Ron Jolly (skip), Margaret Rayment and Trevor Pedley.
