Weather hits competitions

Brentwood bowlers were undeterred by gloomy weather forecasts on Wednesday 16th September when they optimistically turned out to take part in two end-of-season competitions.

But on this occasion, the forecasters got it right and heavy rain put a real dampener on the day.

Brollies were the order of the day on the lower green where six men’s triples teams competed for the Ron Morrish Trophy.

Despite a thorough soaking, they managed to play three games of six ends, with top-scorers Ron Lofts, Derek Robinson and Dave Sach taking the honours. Runners up were Byron Davies, Paul Harrison and Patrick Miller.

Men’s captain Richard Rose said: “I was quite pleased we managed to play the competition. At one point, I thought we wouldn’t be able to do it.”

On the top green, the ladies’ triples competition got off to a good start under a blue sky but the black clouds soon rolled in, forcing an early finish.

Four teams played eight ends in the first game but the following play-offs ended after four ends when Sue Hickman and her team of Janet Howson and Marion Lofts were in the lead and were declared winners. Maureen Jaycock, Jean Kaye and Kath Jolly were runners-up.

Winners of both competitions will receive their trophies at the club’s annual awards presentation dinner on Saturday 7th November.
