Brentrwood Bowling Club, 2012 winners of the Morton Trophy, relinquished custodianship of the silverware to Haynes Park after the final of the Essex County Bowling Association Group 4 triples competition on Sunday 8th September.
The final was played on a neutral green at King George’s Bowling Club in Romford where two rinks were in play. Although each club won on one rink, Haynes Park prevailed with the overall score 52 – 35.
Brentwood’s winning rink – John Howard, Geoff Byatt and skip Adam Smith – had a closely-fought game, rolling in two on the last end to finish one shot ahead.
The other team – Les Powell, Byron Davies and skip Ron Lofts – played a game of two halves. They were holding by 14 shots to 10 at the half-way stage but stalled for the last nine ends while their opponents added 22 to their tally.
Earlier in the day, Brentwood’s Les Powell played in the final of the ECBA Group 4 unbadged singles championship but was soundly beaten by Simon Brown of Liberty of Havering.
Although the Brentwood man was first on the board, he was no match for his opponent who cruised to a 21-3 victory.
Afterwards, Les said he was delighted to come away with the runner-up trophy and he’s looking forward to taking part in next year’s competition.
