Which is the tougher challenge … climbing Ben Nevis or bowling on Rink 9 at Brentwood Bowling Club? That’s the tongue-in-cheek question posed by a charity donor supporting a fundraising mountain climb in memory of Valerie Port – wife of social member Terry Port – who died at the end of January aged 70.
The comment appears on the JustGiving website page set up by James Wasmuth, 34, who hopes to raise funds for Macmillan Nurses who helped to care for Valerie in the final weeks of her life. With a week to go, James is now just £100 short of his initial target of £575.
Members of Brentwood Bowling Club and other Essex bowling clubs are among donors who have left messages of support on James’s webpage, some with a humorous twist.
“Must be easier to climb Ben Nevis than bowling on rink 9 at BBC,” quip members of Kings Chase and Billericay.
And other donors from Brentwood have suggested that James might get his Dad – club vice-captain Fred Wasmuth – to stage a sponsored silence. But that idea would never catch on …. or would it?
James aims to fulfil his Ben Nevis challenge on Saturday 31st August and sponsors can support him before and after the event by visiting his page on the JustGiving website.
