Richards Trophy competition

Thirty players took part in a mixed triples competition at Brentwood Bowling Club in tribute to the memory of former members George and Olive Richards from Doddinghurst.

Ten teams played three games each, with top scorers Marina Thorne, Les Powell and Cliff Jaycock (skip) going just one shot clear to win the Richards Trophy which was introduced last season, a year after the death of centenarian George. His wife Olive had died seven years earlier at the age of 90.

Olive and George’s daughters, Janet Alderton from Hook End near Brentwood and Celia Eade from Chelmsford, together with Celia’s husband Frank were on hand to congratulate the winners who will receive the trophy at the club’s annual awards presentation in November.

Club captain Richard Rose welcomed players and guests to the event at King George’s Playing Fields on Sunday 4th August and stressed it was pure coincidence that scores checker Cliff Jaycock was a member of the winning team … for the second year running!

Joint runners-up were: Trish Ould, Ann Betts and Ron Jolly (skip); and Janet Howson, Steve Shute and Byron Davies (skip). Fourth place went to Trevor Pedley, Barbara Jolly and Geoff Byatt (skip).
