Brentwood Bowling Club are through to the final of the county triples competition for the Morton Trophy after narrowly beating Upminster-based Clockhouse in a thrilling semi-final played one rink at home and one away on Thursday 1st August.
Brentwood’s prospects looked doubtful as the away team – Les Powell, Ron Lofts and Byron Davies (skip) – struggled with the rink and, despite scoring eight on one end, lost by seven shots with the score at 26 – 19.
When this news reached the home team – John Howard, Ron Waller and Adam Smith (skip) – they were eight shots ahead with several ends still to play. Fortunately, they hung on to their lead to finish 18 – 10, giving Brentwood overall victory by just one shot. They will now meet Haynes Park or Romford in the final on 8th September.
Brentwood are current holders of the Morton Trophy after beating Gidea Park in last year’s final of the Essex County Bowling Association Group IV competition for unbadged players.
