Club Vice-Captain Fred Wasmuth is this year’s winner of the Jubilee Shield after beating Keith Newberry in the final played on Sunday 23rd September.
Fred was 8 – 5 up on the last end of the 10-end game, leaving Keith needing all three woods to count to force the game into an extra end. But Fred kept control of the game and rolled in his three woods for an 11 – 5 victory.
Fifteen players took part in the competition, with first-round losers going into the Jubilee Plate which was won by Ron Lofts.
Ron is developing a reputation for dramatic finishes and this was no exception as he took on John Howard in a game which went to a tie-break with the score at 6 – 6.
Although he was one shot down, Ron retained focus as he prepared to make his final delivery which took the jack back to a waiting wood, giving him a two-point lead with the score at 8 – 6.
Club President Byron Davies thanked Competitions Secretary Cliff Jaycock for organising the day and he also thanked lady members who volunteered to mark.
The Jubilee Shield and Jubilee Plate will be presented to the winners at the annual awards ceremony on Saturday 3rd November.
History note: The Jubilee Shield was presented to the club to mark its golden jubilee in 1958. The club green was then behind the Yorkshire Grey pub in the high street and it was the pub’s brewers who donated the trophy for a one-day singles competition.
